How Training Works

How training works

A traditional practice taught one person at a time.

Training at Boulder Kung Fu Academy follows a shared curriculum and clear standards. Students work toward the same requirements, while each person’s practice develops in its own way. Sifu Wang teaches each student individually within the group, offering guidance and introducing material as understanding grows.

Classes bring students together for instruction, partner work and shared training. Between classes, students spend time with what they have been given so that it gradually becomes their own.

Progress through the curriculum

Each stage prepares the ground for what follows.

The curriculum is cumulative. Stances, forms, partner exercises, weapons, applications and other training methods are learned in sequence. Later material depends upon the coordination, body mechanics and understanding developed through earlier training.

Kung Fu students attend at least twice each week, and Tai Chi students attend both weekly classes. This regular rhythm helps students keep their attention on the practice. Kung Fu students also participate in quarterly testing—an opportunity to demonstrate current material, see what has improved and clarify what needs further practice. Progress is based upon demonstrated growth—not simply time spent at the Academy.

For this reason, Kung Fu and Tai Chi are taught as ongoing programs rather than drop-in classes.

Beginning at the Academy

Start by observing.

Prospective students begin by completing an observation request for Kung Fu or Tai Chi. Your responses help Sifu Wang understand what draws you to the training and determine whether a visit makes sense. If invited, you will speak with him and observe part of a class.

An observation gives you a chance to see how the school actually trains and whether its approach resonates with you. The Academy does not offer trial classes.

New students normally begin at the opening of a calendar quarter—January, April, July or October. In some cases, Sifu Wang may invite a student to begin sooner.

Your first step

Experience the school for yourself.

If this way of training resonates with you, begin by telling Sifu Wang a little about yourself and what draws you to the practice.
