Boulder Kung Fu Academy celebrates its 16th anniversary today!⁣⁣⁣ 2023 has turned out to be quite the eventful year. I’m grateful to have been able to share traditional Chinese martial and healing arts with everyone who has had the curiosity and courage to explore this path. Thank you to all the students, past and present, who have helped shape the academy and community through the years.

Devin and Luke are the first students since Dec 2021 to officially be accepted into our school (and the Practitioner Program). Congrats and keep up the great work and dedication to your training!⁣

Seth and Michelle have rejoined our school after each having been away for over a decade. Both had trained for several years during the early period of the school’s history. It’s been wonderful having both of you at the school again!⁣

Heartfelt gratitude to my Sifu, Yamel Torres, for

Heartfelt gratitude to my Sifu, Yamel Torres, for coming out from Chicago with some of his students for this year’s Colorado Retreat! Thank you for inspiring and sharing with my students. I’m glad the students from both schools were able to bond over their appreciation of kung fu, tai chi and qigong. Great job to all of my students this weekend. Keep up the hard work.

I’m excited to congratulate Jewl on earning her

I’m excited to congratulate Jewl on earning her Black Sash tonight! Jewl is the first person to successfully go through our “Teacher Program” at the Boulder Kung Fu Academy. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Jewl Petteway first started studying with me in 2008. She began her training by building a strong foundation with solid stances and learning the Twelve Characters and their applications. She then learned several Chin Woo forms before working her way up to Seven-Star Praying Mantis forms.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Over the years, I’ve seen Jewl grow and evolve as a martial artist and person. She has always figured how to work through any obstacles she faced, whether it be personal setbacks or plateaus during training. Her focus, persistence and resilience highlights an inner strength and deeper personal integrity.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Despite moving cross-country with her family early last year, Jewl made the commitment to return to Boulder - solely to prepare for her test. Such is her commitment to kung fu and her martial arts path. I am grateful her partner and child have always been supportive and encouraging of her journey.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Yet, beyond her personal accomplishments, Jewl’s influence extends to the wider BKFA community. Service is deeply ingrained in her actions. Jewl has had the responsibility to help teach her kung fu brothers and sisters at my school, giving her teaching experience. She always strives to inspire others through example.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Jewl has also attended a number of tournaments. The most recent being in 2021, where she won 3x Gold medals for continuous sparring, empty hand form and weapon form at the ICMAC International Chinese Martial Arts Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
After 15 years of dedication and training, it’s with great pleasure I present Jewl with her Black Sash today. Please join me in celebrating this significant milestone! And a special thank you to my Sifu, Yamel Torres, for always being there to help guide Jewl and me as a teacher.
